Emergency Supply Sheds
When individuals and families arrive at tsunami evacuation assembly areas they will need food, water and medical supplies. To meet these needs the South Tillamook County Emergency Volunteer Corps has undertaken a project to build emergency supply sheds at all the coastal assembly areas. Local committees will be affirmed to engage and work with the residents who live nearest to the sheds, The residents will be able to give input on the shed, its color and location.
Purpose of the emergency supply sheds: The content of the sheds will be available to those who arrive at the tsunami evacuation assembly areas. These sheds will store food, water, medical supplies, emergency communication equipment and sanitary/hygiene supplies to support fifty (50) people for three (3) weeks.
Description of shed: Each shed will be 8’ by 12’, made of pressure-treated (100-year life) wood, including the sub-floor. The inside of the sheds will be sprayed with a stain-kill paint to seal in the toxicity of pressure treated wood. Each will then be toggle bolted with cable into the footing going underground 5’ and resting on six (6) 12” piers. It will have the uplift resistance of 30,000 pounds. We decided on wooden structures because they are easier to tie down. The cost difference between a wooden storage shed versus a metal container is minimal since both must be tied down to withstand uplift and side-loading.
STCEVC will engage volunteers from our various communities to assist in the building of the sheds. Students from the Nestucca Valley School District will also be involved in this project.
